Interesting parallel with OZ. Where is our Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Colbert etc? This country is sorely lacking a humorous balance.
And Guantanamo is still operating, too. In theory I like Obama – but he’s been a fizzer.
Why do seppos have to applaud nearly every damn quip and remark?
Obama is a strange one to understand and judge when you reflect on his reputation vs his presidential record. I like the sound of him but dislike what he actually is in many cases.
– Talks about freedom and individual rights but pushes through some of the biggest increases in US State rights to perform individual surveillance and tracking without civil safeguards.
– Talks about positive economic changes for the largest world economy and increases efforts to introduce and extend international trade agreements that favour US companies and exacerbate the non-competitive and unregulated trade practices that were such a big factor in the recent global financial crisis.
To me his saving grace is that though he is a US protectionist with a priority to increase US dominance and control over world markets, he is far less destructive in this than a republican alternative, he has far better social aspirations than the republicans and is smart enough not to commit the US to continue the destructive path that his opponents wish for. China may be on the rise, but it has far more implied influence than actual influence (outside of Oz, where it is conveniently keeping our heads above the water). If the US tumbles we all tumble and if nothing else Obama is at the head of the only major US political party trying to avert this.
maher is an american tv icon even though we have to follow him on you tube. as independant as bill o’reilly, at least he is funny. he is too extreme compared to cobert and stewart who are excellent but maher’s willingness to cross the line guarantees him a only a weekly late night show. but watch him and read his history – he loves obama but not as much he hates the republicans. guests have included hitchens, dawkins, cornell west, oliver stone. p j o’rourke, calin, netenyutu. plus he appears on fox, the view……..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YgdSd1D2tg – a fun intro.
