What’s happened to superhero movies? When did they become so dark and disturbing? In the words of Heath Ledger’s Joker: “why so serious?”
In this episode of The Parallax Podcast, hosts Luke Buckmaster and Rich Haridy explore the darkening of the superhero genre. They discuss Christopher Nolan’s furious send-off to his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, and also review veteran Australian writer/director Rolf de Heer’s latest film The King is Dead!
From the DVD shelf Buckmaster and Haridy discuss Shame and Take Shelter, then invite cult film expert Zak Hepburn to talk about the perverse 1977 Japanese horror sideshow House.

Since Btaman is basically an American charater I feel fairly safe in commenting on this topic. Batman was always a dark character the original 1930s Batman was a very dark character and had to be lightened up considerable for the 1970s TV show..Most American movie comic book characters in the past 30 years or so have been dark ie the Hugh Jackman portrayal of Wolverine
