Another day, another report on the machinations over media regulation and the government’s response to the Finkelstein inquiry and the Convergence Review.
We’re proud of the coverage Crikey has provided on the unquestionably important issues of regulating the media. But then we punched in some keywords into the news aggregator Factiva and found we’ve been put in the shade. On stories containing the phrase “media regulation” over the past 12 months:
And stories on “Finkelstein”:
As The Australian naturally reports, Labor MP Steve Gibbons reckons journalists should be fined for dodgy stories. What about fines for editors who pursue their own interests so obsessively?
Ah! the “Australian”; crappy news, crappy reporting and generally a pox on Australian society. Many people wouldn’t read it if it were given to them for free.
Some people think and say Paul Kelly and others working for that rag, get a talking, interview and discussion points paper from their employer each morning to help them though the days work. No talent you see. My question – is this true?
Should there be a Murdochian page 3 – just like in England – to help improve the quality of the Australian and last but not least – ciculation and sales?
mea culpa! throughthe days work …circulation and sales
Just in, The OZ is shite.

It would seem that, by sheer volume, that the OZ has been assiduous. What a pity that the sheer volume/quantity of its commentary (hardly reportage) is in inverse ratio to the accuracy & quality.
As for Polonius being this country’s “… most respected journalist..”, I think his (nick)namesake in Hamlet is spot on, “officious, garrulous, and impertinent, a tedious old fool, a busy body & comprehensively wrong in every judgement” (Hazlitt in Encyclopaedia Britannica).
Time for the humane killer, he’ll never retire voluntarily and go off to smell his clippings.
If you can’t use your shop to promote your self-interest (above the national) what good is having it?
