If this speech wins over any of the 10-15% deficit in the Romney women’s vote, it will be the Stepford Wives brigand. Really, was I the only one to keep seeing the Glenn Close character’s Mother Stepford Wife? And you know what happened to her robot husband’s head in that movie!
To be fair she had an impossible gig–trying to sound genuine when talking of tuna salads in her & Mitt’s Dickensian youth. Riiiiilly. I just cannot see this turning around many opinions, indeed I suspect it will entrench the PR problem.
Of course ditto for Chris Christie’s speech–which he was implored by the party flaks not to stray from the written words. It was a speech better on the written page than the presentation where it came across as too rehearsed, especially at the end where he tried rallying the troops (with unfortunate camera cuts to a subdued Mitt). He both showed up Mitt for what he needs to be—believe in something like Christie does, able to convey these ideas to an audience but most of all is the problem that what Christie wants for his party is not what the lunatics driving the party groundroots wants. Again, how is that supposed to help Romney? (On the other hand, as most commentators have noted, it will help CC’s chance of the 2016 nomination if he so wishes–and gets his stomach stapled.)
And to prove these points will be Huckerbee. Then Condi Rice (who during all the camera-panning during Anne R’s blonde-multimillionaire ladies-who-lunch speech, often appeared to be the only non-white face).
