The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Novak Djokovic did well for Seven last night. But the tennis audience in metro markets dipped under a million viewers (to 971,000). The national audience was over 1.4 million which is not bad, but not a smash result.
MasterChef: The Professionals remained above the million viewer mark in metro markets (and 1.432 million nationally). But it lost ground in Adelaide and Perth where the ABC pushed past Ten, and Nine into second spot in the main channels. But MasterChef: The Professionals again won the under 50 demos for Ten, which is all it is interested in, even if the program is not quite what we were led to believe. The professionals are average, Marco Pierre White isn’t an ogre and the food is pretty remote from what you and I might whip up at home on the cook top or the barbie. It is in fact the furthest from the spirit and idea of MasterChef established in season one and two.
Tonight: More tennis on Seven. The final one day international cricket game between Australia and Sri Lanka is on Nine from Hobart. Ten has the final and second last episodes of The Wedding Band from 7.30pm. There’s a repeat of the Bee Gees documentary on ABC1 at 8.30pm.
In the US some Australian names are featuring in the mid-season TV pilot pick up (by the TV networks) season which is underway this week. According to reports in US media and online sites, CBS has signed for a pilot from Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI etc) called Hostages. But the network reportedly only signed when the producers got Toni Collette on board as the lead. Rose Byrne is said to be in strong demand for the female lead in a growing number of new pilots. She is said to be very “bankable” for producers (Byrne starred in Damages which appeared here on the Nine Network). The US version pilot of ABC1’s Rake (starring Greg Kinnear) is set to be green lighted this week. And Rebel Wilson is set to appear as the lead in a single-camera remake of a CBS pilot from last year called Super Fun Night. That pilot will be for the US ABC network.
