Another miserable night for Seven, with The Mole now known as The Flop with only 896,000 national/ 555,000 metro/ 341,000 regional viewers. There is just no reason four anyone to watch it, apart from those wanting to have an early ziz before the Tour d’France starts on SBS.  The Mole has had over a week to reintroduce itself to viewers after the eight-year hiatus — and viewers have said, “nope”.  The Mole ran fourth behind 7.30 and Kitchen Cabinet on ABC1, MasterChef on Ten and half of The Block and the Great Australian Bake Off on Nine.

And that in turn was the worst of all worlds for another returner on Seven — Winners and Losers at 8.30pm — its first appearance for 2013 was only watched by 1,147 million national/ 798,000 metro/ 349,000 regional viewers, which isn’t enough.

The Mole will have to go to prevent it from sinking Winners and Losers. Apart from the 6pm news and Today Tonight, Seven’s best performed program was good ole Home and Away with million 1.453 million national/ 923,000 metro/ 530,000 regional viewers.  Those are figures The Mole can only dream of.

As a result Nine had another surprisingly easy win from a weak Seven and Ten in third with another solid performance from Under The Dome — 1.450 million national/ 1.015 million metro/435,000 regional viewers. Nine won strongly in metro and regional markets. MasterChef  had 1.067 million national/ 773,000 metro/ 294,000 regional viewers, while 7.30 had 1.210 million national/ 835,000 metro/ 375,000 regional viewers. Kitchen Cabinet at 8pm had 1.067 million national/ 741,000 metro/ 326,000 regional viewers. All these programs were interesting to viewers –– The Mole lacked that basic requirement for many of its target audience.

The Block led the way with 2.074 million national/ 1.446 million metro/ 628,000 regional viewers, with the new program, The Great Australian Bake Off, holding its own with 1.579 million national/ 1.119 million metro/ 460,000 regional viewers. And that was the night.

And in this week of returns, the biggest of them all tonight with the Ashes cricket Tests back on Nine on its Gem digital channel (dramatic breakthrough?). Will the audience beat The Mole? It’s retro TV if you like, with England trying for a third successive win — the last time it achieved that was in the 1950s when TV was just an infant and Kerry Packer a schoolboy. Howzat?
