A very bad night for Ten with the debut of A League Of Their Own, which added its name to the growing list of flops from the current network management team. But while that was a terrible result, Seven can’t be all that happy about its debutante Million Dollar Minute. While it did well, with 1.205 million national/ 811,000 metro/ 394,000 regional viewers, and boosted the Seven News audience well past 2 million viewers nationally, it didn’t help in Sydney or Melbourne where Nine News again won big.
Nine News had 411,000 viewers in Sydney to Seven’s 314,000 and in Melbourne Nine News had 451,000 viewers and Seven News had 362,000. Million Dollar Minute provided a small boost for Seven News in Sydney and Melbourne, but the gaps to Nine are very, very large. In fact the biggest boost came in Perth where Seven’s News beat Nine’s struggling bulletin by a massive 194,000 viewers. Boosting the national figures and audiences in markets such as Perth and Adelaide is not what Seven wants, it wants to boost its weak news bulletin in Sydney and Melbourne.
The ABC was very solid with Australian Story (1.511 million national/ 983,000 metro/ 528,000 regional viewers). An excellent episode that got the good figures it deserved, and once again showed up the high profile 60 Minutes and Sunday Night in telling difficult stories well. Q&A was better for the end of the election and the absence of mainstream politicians (except for the Queensland Greens Senator Larissa Waters, who couldn’t avoid politicking instead of joining in the debate) — the 1.214 million national viewers on ABC1 and News24 was proof of the high level of interest and ABC1 easily won the timeslot.
