I suppose Ten’s Wake Up and Studio 10 could find an audience, but after the disaster yesterday morning on-and-off camera, I doubt it. Take yesterday, the big $1 million prize promotion involving Ita Buttrose on Wake Up and a beach in very wet, windy weather. At the end of that, Buttrose was supposed to be ferried back to Ten’s studio at Pyrmont for Studio 10. That failed when the boat broke down.
Wake Up got 44,000 national/ 28,000 metro/ 16,000 regional viewers. Studio 10 got 46,000 national/ 32,000 metro/ 14,000 regional viewers. Metaphors abound about the failed promo and the weak audiences for both programs, don’t they? The programs’ ratings benchmarks are the averages for last week: Wake Up 65,000 national/44,000 metro/21,000 regional. Studio 10’s 67,000 national/48,000 metro/ 19,000 regional viewers. yesterday both programs fell well short. The overwhelming impression is of terminal decline unless radical change happens very quickly.
In a close night it was Seven’s night in metro and regional markets in All People, but Nine’s in 16-to-54s. The ABC was third overall and Ten a very distant fourth. Ten was just weak: in the morning and in prime time with the very silly A League of Their Own still occupying the 7.30pm slot. It’s killing Monday nights (and Homeland).
The ABC lineup — from 7.30 to Australian Story and Four Corners — all were top class. Q&A was surprisingly interesting for the lack of one or two business people with a different view. Q&A had 1.036 million national/ 683,000 metro/ 353,000 regional viewers.
The final episode of the fourth series of Downton Abbey drew a record 9.8 million viewers in the UK on Sunday night, according to early ratings data. That will rise well past 10 million when delayed viewing figures are taken into account. The previous overnight record for the series was 9.6 million viewers. 40% of people watching TV in the UK were tuned to ITV for the final episode. No wonder there’s a fifth series on order.
