Brownlow Medal night was Seven’s night, in both metro and regional markets, as nearly four hours of mind-numbing TV (except for the mark and goal of the year) rolled on and on and averaged 1.368 million national viewers on Seven’s main channel, Gem and Southern Cross in Tasmania. It had 1.005 million viewers in metro markets and 363,000 in the regionals on both channels and in Tasmania. The Red Carpet parade was where we saw Seven’s Hamish McLachlan interviewing older brother and AFL boss, Gillon McLachlan and his sister law. (Only in the AFL and in Melbourne.) It was watched by 1.061 million people in national, metro and all regional markets including Tasmania. Incidentally, 172,000 watched the frocks on 7mate, and only 134,000 watched the actual medal event. 7mate is Seven’s “blokes channel”, can’t you tell? A further 286,000 people watched the event on Fox Footy on pay TV, making for a national audience of well over 1.6 million people.
The relentlessness of the Brownlow night on Seven was why Nine’s The Block Glasshouse, which was the most watched individual program last night, couldn’t give Nine a victory. The ABC was third everywhere, while for Ten it was its usual Monday night fourth place. It had 1.998 million national/1.327 million metro/671,000 regional viewers.
Seven’s 6-to-7pm news and current affairs programming was weak last night — at 6pm, Nine News clearly won Sydney by 98,000, Melbourne by 117,000 and Brisbane by a huge 100,000 viewers. But in the morning, Nine’s Today returned to its old, bad ways and failed to crack the 300,000 level in metro markets — its 278,000 lagged badly behind the 351,000 for Seven’s Sunrise.

Losers: Anyone who watched any of the Brownlow coverage, especially the Red Carpet. The frocks failed to shock, as they have done in years gone buy, and the medal count/vote was an anti-climax when we realised Gary Ablett Jnr had too few votes to win (his third medal) by the time he had been injured. It also goes without the need for comment, that Ten was the loser last night. Unlike Nine, it really didn’t offer non footballing types an alternative line-up of interest. Ten ran deader than it usually does on Monday nights at the moment.Metro news and current affairs:
