The third ODI between Australia and South Africa (good win by Australia on the MCG sized ground in Canberra) did the trick for Nine last night in metro and regional markets. The ABC battled gamely thanks to Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell and a good episode of The Chaser’s Media Circus in which the G20 circus was nicely captured. Ten had a night to forget, especially in regional markets as we said good bye to Wonderland (and guess what, Ten is bringing it back in 2015. Can we invoke the three strikes rule for dull and or boring programs in respect of Wonderland next year? A sort of ‘mercy’ rule (look up the rules of kids baseball in the US and gridiron) for local viewers? Wonderland finished with 581,000 viewers — fourth, and having the ODI on Nine was no excuse. Nine, Seven and the ABC would have made a better fist of this program idea, and have done in the past.
The night session of the ODI which saw Australia bowl at South Africa had nearly 1.5 million viewers nationally, a very solid audience. The afternoon session, where Australia batted, was watch by 783,000 viewers. Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell at 8pm had 988,000 national viewers and was 10th most watched nationally — should have been higher. The Chaser was watched by 830,000 nationally. Both were solid up against the ODI cricket. Seven’s Criminal Minds at 8.30pm averaged 1.102 million nationally which also wasn’t bad against the ODI on Nine.
In the morning, News Breakfast continues to add viewers for ABC and News 24, further annoying the commercial networks. Seven’s Sunrise still dominates, Nine’s Today slipped over the 300,000 level in metro markets yesterday (for the first time in more than 10 days) with 327,000. Sunrise had 391,000. News Breakfast had 145,000 on ABC and News 24, making it the third most watched program of the morning. Two years ago it was battling to get a foothold and a year ago it was level pegging with Wake Up on Ten, remember that? Landline on Sundays at midday on ABC1 is another modest ABC program which has added a lot of viewers this year and now regularly outrates the like of Andrew Bolt and his first broadcast at 10am on Sundays on Ten, and sometimes the combined audience with the 4 pm repeat. Landline also regularly outrates Financial Review Sunday on Nine and the ABC1 broadcast of Insiders as well. Look at it and find out why — the answer is easy — it’s good, as is News Breakfast.
