Round two! Today Education Minister Christopher Pyne will try again to push his unpopular university deregulation legislation through the Senate — with some minor changes.
Yesterday Pyne blamed a Greens and Labor scare campaign for opposition to the Coalition’s plan to slash course funding and allow universities to set their own fees — which was voted down in the Senate last night — but in fact a good portion of voters from the government’s own side oppose the plan. They’re not big fans of the other budget measures that are yet to pass, either.
These numbers, from yesterday’s Essential polling done exclusively for Crikey, are a damning summary of the situation facing the Abbott government in the last sitting week of Parliament:
Instead of the faux Left bleating about their bete noirs’ ‘evil’ plans, they should be analysing the misuse of Funds [both Government and non-Government] to featherbed the lifestyles and prestige of the main beneficiaries of the largesse, i.e. university staffs.
Looks like no one wants any of these policies to become reality.
Why doesn’t Toady and his motley crew chuck it all out and start again?
Perhaps changes to the tax on superannuation, for those over 60; less generous concessions for negative gearing; and raising the income tax level for those earning over $100,000 should be considered, for a start!
IMHO, there are many other areas which should also be in the mix, before the Senate agrees to disadvantage those on the bottom rungs of the ladder!!
Why does the dole change for under 30s rate so high? Apparently 39% of respondents have no idea how Capitalism works.
Draco – and 59% of torys! It may not be that they do know but are just so filled with hate & spite & resentment that they don’t care.
ALso interesting that it is the only item that even those Pooters are keen on – all others under or way below half, with the Parental Leave their lowest rating which confirms the loathing they have for those who will be paying their pensions and changing their nappies in the future.
..oops, either delete ‘NOT‘ or add an elegant comma after ‘that‘.
