A close night in the metros, but Nine won and Ten’s main channel slipped past Seven’s into second place. Did Seven’s broadcasting of the exhibition soccer game between Chelsea and Sydney FC on 7mate (411,000 national viewers) drain viewers away from its main channel? In regional markets Seven was a clear winner from Nine, Ten and the ABC.

The ratings on 7mate for the soccer game between Chelsea and Sydney FC showed once again the essential parochial nature of Australian soccer and viewers, no matter all that wonderful talk about a national competition. The game naturally attracted a lot of viewers on 7mate in Sydney and the 12.2% rating underlined that. But the game could only grab a few viewers elsewhere and 7mate’s share in Melbourne (3.9%, which was also the share in Adelaide), 3.8% in Brisbane and 3.3% in Perth reflected the lack of interest in watching Sydney FC. When the Socceroos play, then the nation watches.

Masterchef Australia again won the battle of the “reality” programs — it had 1.446 million national viewers (but only 341,000 in the regions), just ahead of House Rules on Seven with 1.399 million national viewers (including 572,000 in the regions). Nine’s ropey Reno Rumble was back on 1.039 million viewers, with just 287,000 regional viewers. It is really on the nose with viewers in regional markets and those in the metros aren’t too excited about it either.
