I suppose when we pay Cambodia $52 million to take four refugees that these latest payouts are just chump change.
But what of the mechanics of this new policy? Does a DFAT person with a calculator a briefcase full of cash travel on the Navy vessel? Do the smugglers accept Australian dollars or demand US currency? Who decides on the payout, is it per head of reffos on the smugglers boat?
There must be bargaining involved, we are dealing with Asian people. Can the people smugglers do this regularly with the same crew of refugees, do they then share the money?
Those awful smugglers who we love to demonise are certainly doing alright, they have followed Hockeys advice and got a good job. Will they be buying houses in Sydney next?
And one last minor detail, I thought that bribery was illegal under Australian law. Surely this is bribery or is it?
