Yesterday planes were grounded in Melbourne due to “frost bite”. Car windscreens had to be thawed and there was black ice on the roads. The southern city is on track for its coldest July in 20 years.
In Sydney, where winter is usually a blip on the radar between beach trips, people are wearing coats and scarves against the bitter chill. In the sunshine state, it snowed. In Darwin, it dropped below 18 degrees.
Grim times, indeed.
Australia is in the grip of a cold snap that’s almost as bad as a northern hemisphere spring. And we’re not dealing with it well at all. As conditions worsen, a war has broken out between our major newspapers over who coined the term “Antarctic vortex”.
Enough is enough. These painfully cold days — this unbearable run of frigid mornings — must end.
Crikey strongly condemns this Arctic weather, and calls on Jack Frost to go back to where he came from.
(With apologies to The New York Times.)
Foshizz you northern wimps. Down here in South Tassie that’s just normal and it’s not “unbearable” at all. Mind you, we seemed to have missed the blizzards you’ve had of late although Autumn crashed with a thud a bit earlier than usual. A lot more mountain snow than usual to date. It’s early days however as August traditionally has the worst weather.
When you say “northern hemisphere” I think you’re actually saying “Europe”.
There are huge areas of the northern hemisphere that don’t have cold winters. Malaysia in our region comes to mind, as well as masses of other areas where white people don’t live.
@BOB….and North America and North Asia.
Central NSW as usual in mid winter is perfect, crisp mornings followed by scintillating blue skies, golden sun even occasionally necessary to seek shade and just cold enough at night to justify a real wood fire.
Could life be any better?
@AR. Friends of ours from Sth Tassie were there very recently and said the same. Not sure if summer is so pleasant however unless you are near the sea. I could be wrong though. I have to stay out of sun anyway 🙁
