Clarification

Crikey writes: yesterday in Sex scandals and AVOs ensnare NSW Labor we reported that “both Fiona Field and Andrew Clennell applied for apprehended violence orders against each other – both orders were granted on an interim basis.”

In fact, Field’s AVO against Clennell has not been granted on an interim basis.

Clennell’s AVO against Field was granted on an interim basis on July 22.

A spokesman for News Corp Australia told Crikey: “Police applied for an AVO on behalf of Andrew following genuine concerns for the safety of his family. We are confident that the courts will back police concerns.”

On marriage equality

John Richardson writes: Re. “Abbott’s jury-rigged same-sex marriage policy a bridge to nowhere” (yesterday). It was John O’Grady who famously characterised Australians as “a weird mob”. Weird to accept that a phony prime minister can engage in “tricky processes” to “channel” Cory Bernardi, while gaming his own party colleagues and the Australian people into accepting that the issue of marriage equality should be decided by a sham plebiscite or referendum. Even weirder to ignore an even more egregious use of those same “tricky processes” to pass laws that will afford nameless, faceless, shameless, unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats higher powers than our nation’s courts to strip Australians of their citizenship for allegedly committing “crimes”, based on secret allegations made by other nameless, faceless, shameless, unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats? Weirder by the day.
