It was a case of not knowing where to look last night if you were into tennis or cricket (when the Aussies were batting). Nine was the venue of choice. When India was batting, Seven’s tennis was the venue of choice, and then a rush back to Nine to see India’s “record run choke”. In the mean time the wins by Nick Kyrgios, especially Daria Gavrilova (who beat two time Wimbledon champ and sixth seed, Petra Kvitvoa) and the losing performance of Omar Jasika, would have been enough for any local fan.

The cricket won the battle with 1.474 million national viewers, including 1 million in the metros for the night session which featured the Indian choke. The Australian batting in the first session grabbed 934,000 viewers, including 631,000 in the metros. The tennis on Seven’s main channel had 942,000 viewers and another 186,000 watching on 7TWO (total audience for the tennis was 1.128 million, plus streams on the tennis app.

Once again there wasn’t much on elsewhere last night. The sports overkill is in full swing.

Tonight it’s Lleyton Hewitt on Seven versus the Big Bash tip and run on Ten. A big face up. Hewitt takes on the ranked David Ferrera (for Channel Seven’s benefit) and on Ten the first semi final of the men’s Big Bash tonight (before that the first women’s final is on ONE this afternoon). The second semis of both competitions are on tomorrow afternoon and evening. Before all that this afternoon’s third stage of the Tour Down Under on Nine.
