It’s official: we’ve just had our hottest year on record. Again.
Data released yesterday by the UK Met Office shows last year was the warmest since records began in 1850 — and it’s predicted that 2016 will smash that record for the third year running.
“Global mean temperatures reached 1 degree C above pre-industrial levels for the first time [in 2015], and the year’s average global temperature was the highest ever recorded,” according to Peter Stott, head of climate monitoring at the agency.
While Crikey celebrates the fact that Australia no longer has a prime minister who thinks climate change is “crap”, we don’t think it’s enough for Malcolm Turnbull to merely believe in the importance of climate action — he also has to actually act on it.
He’s had four months to settle in to the top job; he’s been invited to the White House. It’s now time for Turnbull to stand up to his party’s old guard of climate sceptics (we’ve compiled a handy list of the Coalition’s dinosaurs here) and dump his government’s woefully inadequate Direct Action policy.
The science is in; the climate is now in “uncharted territory”, according to experts. The Turnbull government must act urgently to curb carbon emissions. If not now, when?
“The Thing” is – Turnbull’s frozen solid, in debt to those denialists within his MT Party that helped him get this gig – it only cost him his previously expressed “principles”?
[(Remember, he is only flesh, blood and bone, narcissist lawyer-journalist-politician after all.)]
If he breaks that ice he’ll go off.
Why are we continually fed ‘spin’ about what the rAbbott and Talcum Malcum did or didn’t, might or might not, do about climate change?
As Klewie says, it should be obvious even to those with half a brain, that Turd will do NOTHING on this issue, because he CAN’T do so. Once you have sold your soul to the devil (so to speak), it is impossible to get it back…no one will believe you anyway.
Where is the balance in this spiel…how about what Labor/Greens are proposing? Labor already has a raft of policy positions out there to improve Australia’s treatment of global warming. And we MUST have a price on carbon…that is essential in world terms.
It will never happen under the LNP…no matter who is running the show!!
CML unfortunately labor promises little and delivers less, being equally bound, hide & hair, to its sponsors who cannot exist were real AGW policies put in place.
BigBiz or BigUnion, it’s all, and only, about money & power.
Effective change would, due to the systemic nature – decentralisation – benefits none in the BigAr$se end of town, blue or white colour.
The same dinosaurs who carp on about inter generational debt and it’s evils and unfairness..
AR…bull+hit! You are confusing the Labor Party with the LNP…it is the latter who BREAK ALL THEIR PROMISES! The Labor Party does NOT have a history of doing so.
You, and many others, are misleading the public with these remarks because the Labor Party have already released a number of policies on climate change…and they will implement these policies if elected.
That is more than you can say for ANY other party…the Greens will never be in power to do anything useful, and I’ve already said, who would trust the Talcum mob to deliver on their promises!!!!!
