Nine’s night in the metros in total people and the main channels, but in the regions, Nine won total people, but Seven won the main channels. Ten was solid as I’m A Celebrity lived up to its potential with the elimination (1.087 million national viewers) finally out-rating the lead-up (999,000). The extra 88,000 who tuned in for the elimination would be a welcome sign for Ten.

The most watched programs in regional markets last night were: Home and Away with 463,000; The Chase Australia (5.30pm), 411,000; Nine News, 373,000; ABC News, 360,000; 7.30, 315,000.

More sweaty whale wresting in Sydney last night (in the far, far west at humid Penrith) on Nine and Fox Sports. But the Penrith Canterbury NRL game (with the final try/after the bell conversion to win it for Canterbury) didn’t rate as highly as the opening Thursday night game a week earlier (and the first game of the season proper) between Brisbane and Parramatta. Last night 748,000 people watched the game on Nine, Win and Gem nationally against 862,000 a week earlier. And on Foxtel 186,000 watched the game on Fox Sports 1, down from 210,000 a week ago. That meant the combined national audience was an estimated 934,000, down from the 1.072 million a week earlier.

So will we get a repeat of the silly crowing we had last weekend from Fox Sports and the News Corp papers on how well their coverage did last night? Last Saturday there was a nasty story in the Tele pointing to the weak start for Nine’s coverage and how strong Fox Sports was. It was actually just another example of pointless point scoring which the Murdoch press has turned into an art form.

There’s more whale wresting tonight and Sunday on Nine and Fox Sports over the weekend. At the moment it is not the weather for NRL or AFL, or soccer for that matter.
