Just nothing last night. Janet King on the ABC — weak. The Checkout was OK, and the highlight. Seven was a programmed desert. Nine had whale wrestling on in NRL markets and the AFL Footy Show (dinosaur wrestling under lights) in AFL markets. The digital channels were full of repeats and odd American shows (tatts!).  Nine won the night in metros and regional markets because of the NRL and the AFL Footy Shows, helped by the 6pm News.

In regional markets the most watched programs were: Home and Away, 498,000; The Chase Australia 5.30pm, 414,000; Nine News, 368,000; NRL, 363,000; ABC News, 350,000.

Nine’s whale wresting between Manly and Parrramatta averaged 453,000 metro viewers on Nine and its Gem digital channel, plus a further 240,000 on Fox Sports 1. The AFL Footy Show had 492,000 viewers on Nine live and on delay. Nationally the NRL game had a total of 823,000 viewers, the AFL Footy show,656,000.

Sunrise won metro breakfast narrowly: 321,000 to 316,000 for Today.
