In the metros, a standard Monday night with The Voice in Nine’s schedule and nothing else really grabbing viewer interest. Masterchef was slow, House Rules is back to the start of another cycle which will end next Sunday. Four Corners stood out (see below) and that was the night. But in the regions, Seven won both total people and the main channels, with the ABC third in front of Ten (reversing the metro finish).
The Voice averaged 1.787 million national and 1.278 million metro viewers. Seven News had a big night, topping the national figures because of a big audience in the regions, dragging the 6.30 part of the hour along with it.
The five most watched programs in the regions were: Seven News, 678,000; Seven News/Today Tonight, 548,000; Home and Away, 541,000; The Voice, 509,000 and House Rules 479,000.
On pay TV, the latest episode of Game of Thrones dominated on showcase with 355,000 and 275,000 viewers. The alternate Game of Thrones (AKA The Bolt Report at 7pm on Sky News) and its coverage of the 2016 election campaign saw the audience jump to 42,000 as the political caste tuned in to see the latest atrocity from Peta Credlin. She didn’t disappoint. If you were a clever boss of Sky News, you’d rest Bolt and put Credlin in full time as the headline grabbing host. Whether she can continue to be a commentator post-election is another thing, but she is just what Sky wants (and a nice threat to Bolt and Paul Murray, the resident Del-Con stars on the network).
Four Corners last night was a buy-in from the US with a New York Times reporter (who was excellent) combining with the PBS Frontline program from the US (and a Canadian broadcaster) to give viewers one of the best reports of this kind I have seen on the doubtful virtues of vitamins and supplements. My only regret is that Four Corners itself couldn’t do a report based on Australian experience of vitamins and supplements. Last night’s report set out the doubts about vitamins and supplements, found the doubters, and the spinners for the industry who struggled. Vitamins and supplements are a waste of time and money and in some cases increasingly dangerous to our health and well being. Four Corners averaged a nice 1.008 million viewers across the country, and 729,000 in the metros.
