Masterchef again dominated the night among non-news programs, with 1.566 million national viewers and more than 1.15 million in the metros, which made it third national and second in the metros. But Seven won the metros, with Ten second and Nine a weak third.

Seven won the regionals, with Ten second (in Total People), but in the main channels Nine ended up second in the regionals with Ten a close third.

Seven’s 6pm news had one of its best evenings for some months with solid wins in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth (but lost Sydney to Nine). The upshot was a win in the metros by nearly 190,000 viewers, which is an unusually large margin for such a competitive slot. The continuing success of The Chase Australia at 5.30pm (752,000) helped as well as it gave Seven’s News a much stronger lead than Hot Seat (515,000) did for Nine’s News. That’s a continuing headache for Nine’s programmers and of course another one for a course of painkillers for host Eddie McGuire.

In the regions, Seven News was the most watched with 662,000 people, followed by Seven News/Today Tonight with 521,000, Home and Away was third with 512,000, then The Chase Australia 5.30 with 484,000 and 5th was Masterchef with 411,000

In breakfast Sunrise won with 328,000 to Today’s 307,000.

Tonight: Mad As Hell with Prime Minister Shaun Micallef, and then and Catherine Tate’s Nan. Offspring (come Nina) and Masterchef on Ten. Nine a black hole.
