“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find [Hillary Clinton’s] 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”
That is Donald Trump. A presidential candidate openly inviting a rival superpower (one whose human rights abuses are well documented and whose imperialist hunger for territory is insatiable) to commit a major crime against a domestic political rival.
Yes, Donald, Russia is listening. Russia is listening when you suggest Crimea should be Russian territory, contrary to longstanding United States and European Union policy. Russia is listening when you say:
“I would treat Vladimir Putin firmly, but there’s nothing I can think of that I’d rather do than have Russia friendly as opposed to the way they are right now.”
Russia is listening when you say:
“I was shocked to hear [Putin] mention the N-word [about President Obama] … He has a total lack of respect for President Obama … I think he’s going to respect your president, if I’m elected, and I hope he likes me.”
Good news, Donald! He does like you. Said Putin:
“Donald Trump is] a really brilliant and talented person, without any doubt. It’s not our job to judge his qualities, that’s a job for American voters, but he’s the absolute leader in the presidential race.”
Wonder why that might be …?
” I hope you’re able to find [Hillary Clinton’s] 30,000 emails that are missing.”
Since NSA records everything, why does he not ask them?
This editorial is so full of errors of fact and assumptions that one despairs. You are no better than the McCarthyite attacks that are characteristic of what passes for media comment in the US today, as Stephen Cohen pointed out with great clarity and force earlier this week.
It is garbage such as this that make me ponder whether I should renew my subscription.
The Donald is a closet Commie. Where is another all American senator Joe McCarthy when you need him. Imagine Trump coming out with the statements he has in the early 1950’s. Ronnie Reagan would have helped put the Trump behind bars.
If Trump does actually win in November, and that if may be getting bigger, then the US military may end up organising a coup on their own soil.
“one whose human rights abuses are well documented and whose imperialist hunger for territory is insatiable”
I’m no lover of Putin, but the above description is as applicable to the US as it is to Russia. The US prison population is higher than Russia’s, extra-judicial killings of citizens by security forces is common and largely done with impunity, large parts of the population are de jure and de facto excluded from voting, the list goes on … Oh, military bases in hundreds of countries, military spending which exceeds the rest of the world combined, more invasions since WW2 than any other country – again, the list goes on.
I’ve visited Russia a fair few times, speak and read passable Russian, so I’m aware of what life is like there – and I’d choose the US any time if I had to make that unpleasant choice. Nevertheless, this lazy editorialising sounds like any old rubbish from the mainstream media.
