In The Daily Fix, Crikey taps into the wisdom of experts and community leaders to find solutions to problems. Today: climate change.
The federal government, above everything else, has to stop allowing a particular industry sector free rein to write energy policy. It’s become so normalised for coal and gas interests to write Coalition policy that it would be a huge break if they evicted all the lobbyists and embedded staff and stopped taking industry money.
I understand that there is zero chance of the present government doing this, but a hypothetical future government could.
Seems most unlikely – but it would be a clear and far-reaching step for a government to take so that this one industry didn’t lock in the rest of the country to horrific climate change consequences.
Instigating an wide reaching Independent Commission into Corruption in the Federal government sphere would be of utility, also.
Energy policy aside, why is paid lobbying even legal?
Why indeed????
Soooooo corrupt!
Couldn’t agree more Scott, our democracy has become blatantly corrupt…..
Canada has a Commissioner for Lobbying. We could have one here, only our political class know there’s no appetite for one.
Thank you Scott it is nice to hear from you. What a great idea! where do we start, gambling is also one I’d like to add to the list.
