The 2020 Crikey Awards– already attracting well over 4,000 votes after a single day — features a (as far as we’re aware) first for the competition: someone campaigning to win the title of Arsehat of the Year. We should have seen it coming, from, let’s face it, our weakest candidate:
Given a considerable chunk of Jordies’ appeal comes from portraying himself as too dangerous for the hacks of the mainstream, of course he’d want to win, rather than allow one of the far stronger candidates — people he spent the year railing against — to get some more bad press.
Anyway, it seems to be working. His fanbase has propelled him into an early lead — and, with breathtaking levels of student politics energy, clogged our various social media feeds with accusations of us being sub-Murdoch corporate shills. You’re welcome, we guess?
Still, a lot of our readers are standing firm on a more obvious candidate, Prime Minister Scott Morrison who is extremely close on Shanks’ tail.
As one voter put it: “I still have Morrison at top of my list. He alone is the boss of this outfit that attacks workers, protects dubious conduct, makes announcement after announcement with no follow up. Plus the latest snub of him in climate talks shows that the world are onto him and with no Murdoch media to twist the facts has nowhere to hide on the world stage.”
Elsewhere, our readers gave us a few ideas on some candidates we’ve missed for person of the year, including last year’s winner New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern:
For Person of the Year, I want Jacinda Ardern. Yes, from across the dutch. Where do I sign to become The West Island? While I have the contract pen in hand, where do I sign in support of WAxit? This federation is looking very old. It’s time for the Tasman Bubble to become a governance model.
While another voter was keen on Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan, destroyer of worlds (or at least of Liberal party leaders):
What about the state premier who didn’t have any corruption or rorts scandals, who quickly and firmly put a COVID-19 protection plan in place and stuck to it despite enormous pressure from Morrison and his gang, who moved quickly to see off an extreme right-wing dinosaur from Queensland who wanted to bring COVID-19 to the state, who has presided over a $2 billion surplus ($1 billion more than was in the state budget), and who had foreign ship workers brought ashore and treated for COVID-19, and who is about to gut and hang out to dry the opposition in March’s state election?
Still, topping the list so far for Person of the Year is that cypher for the highs and lows of 2020, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.
Have your say by voting here.
I’m voting for Jordies, that racist, genocidal maniac!
Came so close to unsubscribing from Crikey after seeing his name on the list – had to double-take.
And it’s those levels of ‘student politics energy’ that’s sorely missing from our safe and corruption-abiding news media publications, to the great detriment of our politics and society; I wouldn’t be smug about that.
Keep up the good work, Jordies.
“ Came so close to unsubscribing from Crikey after seeing his name on the list – had to double-take.”
Me, too! I genuinely thought I was reading a satirical piece which had been misclassified when I saw him name on the list!
Jordies has been banging on about corruption in nsw for ages yet crikey writers seemed astonished when her royal nsw highness became unstuck. “Well respected and stable” please ?!?! Perhaps if you were reporting on her policies rather than Trump some of her govts behavour would have come to light earlier
Strange crickey appears to be offended by satire when it’s carried out by a comedian rather than poorly by their own journalists (the piece today on scott was unreadable and dull)
“Menacing of journalists” – while I don’t agree with everything he says the press release regurgitatorists jordies goes after deserve everything they get because they attacked him personally of flimsy grounds and dont really give 2c about real journalism due to being in the pocket of the nsw coalition
This all sounds like sour grapes to me from people who haven’t actually viewed his content. Content which raises serious issues regarding the media industry behavior and environmental issues to people who have not been exposed to any decent news their whole life. I would have though Crikey would get that but I guess not.
I think ill probably cancel my sub and give it to jordies instead this year.
I did unsubscribe. Jordan Shanks is a bit of a dick, but he and other small outlets are really showing some teeth. I used to get that from Crikey but I feel they have lost their gusto.
Crikey has a few months to change my mind and I really hope they do.
I’m currently looking at not renewing.
If Friendly Jordies is good enough for John Menadue, he is good enough for me.
Take him off the arsehat list please Crikey.
Hell of a tough choice between Scummo and Pantsman Porter though, for most dangerous idealogue – although Gussy Taylor and Fraudenberg are right up there too.
Jordies is a right pain in the arse, and a long way up where he thinks the sun shines, but no one other than Michael West (with whom he claims to work) is exposing National Party corruption anywhere near as much. He might have a point.
Incisive, well researched, very smart, very funny, has integrity. Loathes the lazy, woke left. What’s not to dislike? Friendlyjordordies gets my vote.
I have no idea who Jordan Shanks is. And I really couldn’t be arsed finding out.
Your loss
Do yourself a favour and do so, he’s really good.
If the bien pissants are agin him, I’m a’fore he.
Really? Do I have time to go chasing this up? Probs not. Like Jordan Peterson, great self promoters with thin arguments. But maybe I’ll check him out on your assurances, one rainy day.
He rails against environmental destruction, corruption, political malfeasance and the Liberals (virtually one and the same thing), mostly the NSW Liberals, predominantly via his YouTube channel.
He raises money for charities.
He calls out the media (on both ‘sides’) for its shallowness, lack of spine, and general hypocrisy. He is smeared by certain types in said media (see above article), and is the bane of the Murdoch/Nine press.
He is basically creating a generation of ALP-voting millennials. He speaks his mind, and is refreshing to listen to. And he is funny, and extremely acerbic.
Sounds like the sort who should be writing for this flaccid organ instead of the token interns, neolib headbangers and exMoloch hacks.
He’s an internet troll with a YouTube channel
