To be clear: the AstraZeneca vaccine is orders of magnitude safer than the oral contraceptives that millions of Australian women take regularly, but the government is prepared to further delay its already disastrous vaccine rollout so that people under 50 don’t have to take it, sending Australia into a third year of COVID pandemic?
That’s the confused message delivered by Scott Morrison last night in the wake of other countries restricting the use of the AZ vaccine, on which Australia is relying heavily for its vaccination program — the government’s own figures show the AZ vaccine was supposed to cover two-thirds of our rollout.
That’s a direct consequence of the government deciding not to pursue supply agreements with alternative vaccine providers — something criticised as too risky by Labor at the time — and the relatively late arrival of the Novavax vaccine, which is not scheduled to be rolled out until the last quarter of the year. Already a debacle and millions of doses behind schedule, the rollout will now be recalibrated to reflect that — despite it only being a recommendation — no under-50s will be getting the AZ dose.
But how many over-50s will want the AZ vaccine now? The risk of blood clots is trivially small — but serious if it happens to you. Human beings are not, by nature, good at calculating comparative risk, and with other countries restricting AZ, the government had little choice but to do the same or risk a complete collapse in confidence.
However, the messaging is a mess. Morrison’s decision to invoke the oral contraceptive pill as a comparison was puzzling, at best, given the decision that came within a few hours. If contraceptives have dramatically — thousands of times — greater risk than the AZ vaccine but we’re limiting the latter, what is that saying about a product that millions of woman rely on?
It doesn’t help that Morrison was, the same day and in the same media conference, belatedly trying to recover ground on gender issues by releasing the government’s limited, and already much-criticised, response to sex discrimination commissioner Kate Jenkins’ Respect@Work report.
Beyond the cack-handed messaging, the AZ decision has dramatic implications for both the health of Australians and the economy. While the US and the UK reopen in the months to come, Australia will remain locked up until 2022 as the government tries to recover from its decision to rely too heavily on the AZ vaccine. And the delays in the rollout will place senior Australians at greater risk — especially senior women, who make up 54% of over-70s and 58% of over-80s.
And the risk of sudden lockdowns, resulting from every breach of quarantine, will continue to exercise a deadening hand on the economy into next year. That will disproportionately affect female-dominated industries like retail and hospitality.
The pandemic has not been a one-size-fits-all disaster for Australians, and its prolongation will not be, either.
The only thing that this mob of dangerously incompetent fools IS good at rolling out is the Pork Barrel.
F troop
Weird and totally inconsistent. When the states imposed internal border controls the federal government regularly berated the states and moaned long and loud about the economic concesequences (as though letting the pandemic run amok would not damage the economy more). Now the federal government is imposing another big delay in vaccination because (a) it put all its eggs in one basket with the AZ vaccine and (b) it cannot come up with a way to explain that not giving the vaccine is a bigger danger than continuing despite the rare side effects.
The result of this will be another big hit to the economy, this time with no good reason. Presumably, to be at all consistent with its treatement of the states, the federal government will now beat itself up quite savagely for its blundering stupidity and reckless disregard for the economy.
I look forward to the Govt reversing course on tax cuts and adding a significant windfall profit tax for any companies that obtained public money and paid dividends and bonuses from increased or maintained profits. Libs should pay for disasters of their making. Plus the contracts to McKinsey etc need to be cancelled. What if they don’t have penalty clauses for shite work? Ministers need to be cancelled and those companies blackballed by governments henceforth. Unless the companies voluntarily repay the consultancy money. So sick of being the passive barrel of public money for porking. So undignified.
Gimme a break SSR. Who was it touting these new wonder drug vaccines and insisting that all 7 billion people on the planet get inoculated? Is it the scientists, virologists and epidemiologists who have no dog in the fight and who’s judgements are based on the science alone, or is it the conflicted state bureaucrats, the public health toadies, and faux pas philanthropists who seek access to the personal biology of all humanity in order to effect the changes they believe will trim the world’s population and reverse the projected acceleration of climate change? The hit to the economy started before last year with the lockdowns. I see Morrison’s failure with the slow roll-out of vaccines as a positive for all Australians. Treat covid as just another flu which is what it is and no more lockdowns. We don’t need or want vaccines.
As a woman my opinion and assessment is Morrison just really doesn’t get it an]bout worms issues. He’s all about managing the situation with spin and appearances of doing something rather than actually doing anything truely meaningful. I could forgive him if he was genuinely trying but I don’t think he is. Also re oral contraceptives I had bad blood clots in response to one brand and wasn’t taken seriously by doctors who refused to listen to me until the situation got quite serious. It was an unbearably painful experience so I for one am glad they’re rethinking Astra Zeneca vaccine as it would just be my luck to be one of the small minority that got clots.
Sorry wretched autocorrect – about women’s issues
Well said!
I think it’s a broader problem.
Sure, he very obviously doesn’t get what the problem is (clearly Jenny is not THAT great at explaining things or, I suspect, she doesn’t get it either). But he also doesn’t really care.
He doesn’t care about anything that doesn’t affect him directly. He only springs into (pretend)action when he thinks his job might be at stake. He views everything through this prism.
This whole so-called government operates like that, working only for their own benefit.
‘Working’ is of course a strange word when applied to this lazy pack. Same as ‘governing’. They have no idea what that means. But then again – they’re not really interested in governing anyway. Being in power and keeping the other side out of there while feathering their own nests is what it’s all about.
“But how many over-50s will want the AZ vaccine now?“
I will be 80 in 104 days time. At my age I can remember all the fuss about blood clotting and contraceptive pills. And the fuss about HRT. In fact, I can’t remember any issue where women gained any control over their own reproductive health that did not attract threats of dire medical consequences.
I do want the AZ vaccine and I am happy to have it.
“But how many over-50s will want the AZ vaccine now?“
And thank God for that. There should never have a vaccine roll-out in the first place. You commenters ( and some journalists ) have become attack dogs and enforcers for the new world establishment..ie..klaus Schwab’s great Marxist “reset” all the vaccines do is either make you very sick or even kill you. They don’t work and will never work. It’s just gene therapy you. What don’t you understand?
Oh look, its the fake profile anti-vaxx troll again. As usual, making garbage claims with absolutely zero evidence to back it up.
Memo to Mr Hicks: I have been proven right at every turn. You and your ilk are a 1,000 miles away.
Since you have provided no evidence of your claims, your claim to have been proved (not “proven”–that’s an adjective) right is equally suspect.
At least Marilyn provided a citation even though she lied about its contents.
I have provided countless links and evidence from many expert unembedded and independent virologists, epidemiologists, immunologists and neurologists to prove the case in point. You are a non-stop accuser who’s only source is the filtered view of the daily MSM broadsheets. Because you refuse to do independent research all you can do is MSM cut n paste. We all have an obligation on behalf of all Australians to present the truth instead of political point scoring.
PS- Craig Nesbitt is relentlessly vilified and persecuted on this site and yet he apart from one or two others is the only truthful voice in this wilderness of MSM govt health and medical misinformation and corruption. Take a leaf out of his book.
Yes, Nesbitt is all over these comments like a rash
Not happy either, we pay a subscription to Crikey, but not for Nesbitt et al. to express their freedom of speech to troll grounded comments and science; nowadays they would even be blocked on Facebook……
No mate. To advocate censorship is to encourage and endorse their game. Empiricism suffices to refute them.
Such belief must endure.
Despite past evidence of lack of efficacy.
It does not matter to most people what is true, it is what they believe that they act upon.
So true. The comments we loathe must be allowed so that otners can loathe ours.
Somewhere in the middle we find points of agreement.
History shows us that often enough those who promote censorship eventually get censored themselves.
We are experiencing a form of censorship though, self voluntary, where we flock to publications that echo our beliefs, thereby effectively silencing the other view.
Media is rising up to fill this business model.
¿Hay alguien más en este foro de discusión que pueda hablar español? Porque nadie más aquí entiende el inglés plano.
Nein. Oxi.
Mischien niet, but I understand you all too well…
People my age remember only too well what a polio epidemic was like. I went to school with two kids who wore callipers all their adult lives, lives which were considerably shortened.
Your response is nonsense. We would still have rampant epidemics of crippling diseases like smallpox and polio, lives wrecked by rubella and measles and people dying of tetanus if we had no vaccines.
So do I MJM and I feel like getting out a baseball bat when I read this sort of rubbish. It is worth remembering also that Salk refused to patent his vaccine as did Sabin.
“So do I MJM and I feel like getting out a baseball bat”
Another day, another death threat.
“Another day, another death threat.”
A wonderfully ironic complaint from a ranting anti-vaxx crazy.
Here we go again. The crazy antivax accusation. Just because people like him have a different point of view based actual serious evidence based research you label him a crazy antivax. So boring.
That’s ok, I’m not here to entertain you. But really, ‘serious evidence based research’! You’re having a laugh. Pity it’s not that funny any more.
Bit of a leap.
When people put principles before profit. Sadly those days are gone.
Cheery picking rubbish. The World Health Organization falsely claimed credit for eradicating smallpox and polio. It’s a lie. Smallpox and polio were on the way out long before the first appearance of the toxic vaccines. Do the research.
Just did it. Took 5 mins. You are wrong in my opinion.
Utter tosh.
Which vaccines are you talking about in this damn fool comment? I had classmates with polio, I had measles and it was not the joke you seem to think. I also remember the terror of parents in the face of outbreaks of whooping cough. Get off your bum and look in a graveyard from before vaccines and see how many little kids lie there. Question. If you had the classic dog bite or rusty nail in tha garden in your foot would get a tetanus shot? Would you consider a rabies shot. Or maybe you’d like to return to the days of smallpox.
I also had both measles and mumps long before there were vaccines for either. I wouldn’t recommend risking either disease. The vaccines are far safer.
I have had measles, mumps and chickenpox too. Long before vaccines. I survived. My immune system kicked in and did it’s job. Vaccines will shut down your immune system.
You survived, true, but apparently your reason and intellectual judgement never recovered.
That’s not fair – he was probably even dumber then.
.. mmm, according to Craig, vacation compromises the immune system and is, apparently, deleterious to the white and red cells. That is worth an article in a Med Journal.
If only Fleming and Florey had known THAT there would not be the fuss over penicillin.
Remind me, please, Craig : just how did the bugs develop a resistance to penicillin?
Perhaps whilst they were on ‘vacation‘?
Yes, I think Craig should submit his research to Lancet.
I for one am happy to be educated.
PS I’d like to read some of the peer reviews as well.
Again you falsely claim someone has multiple accounts just to criticise poor little you.
How many have you traduced with that now?
To say nothing of diphtheria. My cousins twin sister died from whooping cough aged 4 before any vaccine was available. I can remember the smallpox out break in Wales in the early 60s. And was happy to be vaccinated again, having been done as a small child. I was also vaccinated against polio and I thank my parents for their care and foresight.
Craig is about to disappear up his own exhaust, I think so it’s well time not to bother engaging with him any further.
As Marcus Aurelius said, when you get to a certain age what difference does a few more or less years make.
On Tuesday I turned 81 and am happy to have another ten or fiteen years, thank you. My family live long active lives and to them if I died at 81 it would be considered far too young.
I’m 78 and healthy. I’d like more than a few more years of enjoying life, red wine. I’d also want to live long enough to learn what dark matter is and why the universe is expanding at an increasing rate. So much to read about, so many excellent movies to see. What a twit that Roman must have been!
I like your points about learning. As for Marcus, he’s the best known of the stoics.
You need to understand stoics to appreciate why he said it.
He was an Emperor who spent most of his time on the battlefield -so his observation is deeply meaningful.
Didn’t necessarily apply to retirees in Australia whose main danger is being hit by a car crossing a road 15 metres from a safe pedestrian crossing because they are losing their marbles
Just as long as it’s not a justification for geriatric genocide…like vaccines.
Why is it over 50, it is over 30 in Britain.
The reason is because in the first wave no one under 50 who didn’t have a medical condition ended up in hospital
Probably people wear out more quickly in the Septic Isles, due to awful conditions of existence for anyone not in A/B social strata.
Hi bj, the answer can be found at Cambridge Winton Centre https://wintoncentre.maths.cam.ac.uk/news/
Essentially the benefit (you don’t end up in ICU due to virus) versus harm (you get a clot) ratio changes with age and also with COVID incidence (which is high in UK and low here).
Given the AZ vaccine is orders of magnitude less harmful than the contraceptive pill, and not vaccinating will leave Australians vulnerable to the inevitable and more lethal next wave of infection & continuing economic devastation, then surely the way forward is to press on with the vaccination
rollout.
There does not seem to be any rational risk assessment in the government’s approach. In fact the only consistency has been incompetence, content free announcements, spin and a few too many sex scandals.
This is looking more like a cynical excuse to put the torpid progress of the rollout into a better light whilst unfortunately and simultaneously increasing the reluctance of the population to be vaccinated.
Australia cant afford such a useless government at a time like this.
The other counties that have put a hold on using AZ on under thirties have other vaccines to fall back on. Having used Pfizer on himself and God only knows who else but not the public, we don’t have a others to choose from.
More political point scoring. Get a life. Vaccines are more dangerous than a standing army. y=Yet another one of Agni’s multiple accounts. Boring.
