One-time rising Liberal Party star Christian Porter is in the fight of his life to save his political career — and not only because of the rape allegation, which he strongly denies. He has held the once blue-ribbon Liberal seat of Pearce on Perth’s northern outskirts since 2013 and although he says he will contest the seat at the next poll, its boundaries have changed significantly.
He surprised many when he was reelected in 2019 with a two-party-preferred vote of 57.5% — a swing to him of 3.9%. And although that margin was cut in the recent redistribution of Western Australia’s federal seats, it’s still a useful 5.2%. But given all that has happened, will it be enough?
Pearce has always been a Liberal seat since being contested for the first time in 1990. Former deputy federal Liberal leader Fred Chaney chose it as the vehicle for his transfer from the Senate to the House of Representatives, but served only one term before quitting politics.
He was succeeded by Judi Moylan, who served as a minister in the Howard government, and held the seat for 20 years before retiring.
That was when Porter, who was treasurer and attorney-general in Colin Barnett’s state government — and widely tipped as his successor as Liberal leader and premier — decided to head for Canberra. He quickly rose through the ranks and was attorney-general when the allegation that a minister had raped a teenager in the 1980s was reported by the ABC earlier this year. Porter identified himself as the subject of the allegation.
But the allegation, and his subsequent removal as attorney-general and — on September 19 — resignation from the ministry have cast a significant shadow over his political future.
His margin in Pearce would be considered comfortable in normal times. But these are far from normal times and much has happened since the 2019 federal poll.
The redistribution of WA’s federal seats was more radical than normal. In fact its federal seats were cut from 16 to 15 — Stirling will be abolished — due to a halt in strong population growth with the end of the last resources boom in 2013.
So the “new” Pearce bears little resemblance to its former self. It lost its rural component — traditionally useful for Coalition candidates — to the neighbouring Liberal seats of Durack and O’Connor, and the rapidly growing suburban areas around Ellenbrook to Indigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt’s seat of Hasluck.
Pearce is now based entirely in Perth’s outer northern suburbs.
The grim news for Porter is that these areas all returned Labor candidates in Premier Mark McGowan’s landslide state election win in March. And his government has done little to upset voters since, while gaining wide approval for its claim of “keeping West Australians safe” during the COVID-19 crisis.
However, Labor’s endorsement of long-term Wanneroo mayor Tracey Roberts in Pearce has not been incident-free. She has had to survive two recent bullying complaints, although the reasons for the findings have yet to be released.
The fight for Pearce promises to be a key contest of the federal election. Labor is keen to get Porter’s scalp, and the “blind trust” — set up to help fund Porter’s legal expenses — will be pursued in the federal Parliament.
Labor thought it had him beaten last time, but was mistaken. Now the question is: will history repeat itself?
Porter is gone at next election, the blithering fool ( tomato head) Joyce is out there saying ” he had a bad day at the wicket” Porter was bowled out ages ago and is still left staring at his score sheet.
And if anyone would know about trying to ressurect the dead, Joyce is a classic example of trying to do it, Bridgette McKenzie comes to mind.
Maybe tomato head can bring in all the sad fools from failed coalution and recreate Frankensteins Monster ( hard to find a workable brain amongst that lot though)
And can some one explain to me how all our sad excuses of Libs are jetsetting the globe whereas the rest of us cannot even travel ..once again deceit, lies and double standards apply in this corrupt L/NP!
Both recidivist offenders against whom women have made complaints, the boys gotta stick together.
But, but what about Bridgette McKenzie? She was resurrected, Barnaby and his apocalypse of zombies, his whole NP is a freak show and Barnaby is the ringmaster.
Mayhaps.Craig Kelly can be sideline act in the show of freaks!
If Kelly wins his seat again (hopefully not) he will become a liberal party hero and be invited back into the camp – probably with a lifetime honorary membership.
So he should be – he’s on the money & happy to stand up to pure BS
I look forward to the day Kelly lies gasping on his bed, insisting to the last breath that at least he died of “underlying causes”.
Perhaps he could not get enough Ivermectin to cure him because the Health Minister did not oreder enough on time.
Not sure Porter’s been bowled out by someone else, his miseries are all self-inflicted asnd well-deserved.
peg before wicket……
I think he hit the wicket with his bat.
Reminds me of Cara Delevingne.
Insert comment referring to maidens.
Do not mention maidens in the confines of L/NP, Porter will be sniffing around with afew others like blood hounds on a trail.
Yep including Porter, Tudge, Beetrooter, Laming, and the Member for Manila. All of these have been very naughty boys allegedly.
Football may be a better analogy – own goal?
Hit wicket then! out is out but according to this sad lot of L/NP out is in
“Yes, doctor, I was playing cricket and my pants and underpants slipped down and then I fell backwards onto the wicket, it was a silly accident”
A Frankensteins monster consisting of undead coalition has beens.
Thanks mate.
I may never sleep soundly again!
Seeing as this is “the Morrison government” would that “barrel” be of pork?
One can only hope it will the the “Chicago barrel”, tradionally filled with concrete and wayward (former) gang members. 😉
It’s sometimes claimed that federal elections are won or lost in Queensland. But this will be an election held in a pandemic & with McGowan’s leadership & popularity at the fore. Factor in Christian Porter’s performances along with Cash’s threat to take WA to the High Court to force the border open & possibly the next federal election will be won in WA. And in Qld…
Yep, I can see plenty of attack adds with Palmers face next to Porters re: border controls. Living in Perth, I’d be very surprised to see Porter retain his seat given his association with Palmer who is detested here.
If Palmer and Cash start up, I can imagine McGowan saying these two want to let Covid19 into the state.
Palmer’s huge ads were very prominent in Pearce polling booths last election. That was before Palmer undertook anti-WA campaigns however.
Given that outside of WA and Queensland, the last election went to Labor! The Libs hold an unnatural ration of the seats in both these states and are unlikely to retain them all.
Not just Cash’s threat, zut. Porter was A-G when the federal government actually supported Palmer’s high court case, before they realised what they were doing. I’d be astounded if the voters forgot that. They might forget a lot, but not that one. Nor do I expect Labor will let them forget.
And Senator Cash at her least Election, 2016, only gained some 1,383 Primary Votes. She picked up the balance to meet the quota to be elected, from Senator Cormann immense Primary Vote. Cormann has since scuttled.
I was thinking the same thing she is number 1 on the senate ticket.
There might be a barrel, it might contain a fresh round, but I do not think anyone in the LNP is going to pull the trigger, at least not until the Party has arranged a nice feather bed for the ex-minister. Retiring, under-performing or cast-off LNP politicians never die they just transition into the LNP Valhalla or Folkvangr. As the Norse Goddess Freyja runs the latter I presume that will be the ex’s favoured resting place.
A feather bed for Porter might have a nasty effect on voting in other electorates, given that Morrison may well be on the scrapheap himself after the next election.
Fox Movies present Scotty of the Antarctic!
Porter: I’m just going out for a little walk…
Scotty: There goes a very gallant gentleman.
Josh: He could’ve waited till he got out of the tent before he farted.
