As the leaders of both campaigns hoped for a bit of fresh air over the Easter long weekend, there was one ember that continued to smoulder: Liberal Warringah candidate Katherine Deves and her history of transphobic posts. Crikey associate editor Cam Wilson spoke with audience editor Imogen Champagne about the steady drip of old social media posts and comments that are fuelling calls to disendorse the candidate in a seat the government hopes to pick back up.

As an opponent of the Morrison Government I really must applaud this own goal. Not only does it ensure the political survival of Zali Steggall who is a great benefit to Parliament but it also increases the prospects for the other independents in nearby seats.Keep it up ScoMo.

Ms Deves opinions are not supported by most Australians. The vast majority feel that our Trans community should live their own lives, without opprobrium or contempt. The vast majority also feel that trans persons playing in female sport disadvantages other players, based on a sense of what’s fair to all players.
This is a very challenging issue, yet to be resolved, because it means that our trans community have little or no opportunity to show their worth in competitive sport.
I have no immediate answers, except that all of us should support all members of our community and work to ensure that their lives are fulfilling and without prejudice.
