Welcome to Crikey’s Electioncast, a new podcast offering an independent and honest look at the politics and policy in the lead-up to the 2022 federal election. Each day Crikey’s journalists will give you a no-spin look at what Australia’s politicians are doing to win your votes.
The 2022 federal election campaign has brought to the fore questions about political journalism and how it best serves its audience. On today’s Electioncast, Crikey investigations editor David Hardaker explains to audience editor Imogen Champagne the open letter he wrote to Australian journalists about how improving the quality of coverage rests on their shoulders.
Electioncast is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify and wherever you listen to your podcasts.
Thank you David Hardaker for articulating exactly how many people feel about the low quality media coverage of this election.
The constantly aggressive questioning of Labor and silly gotcha moments by journalists when government corruption is at its highest and government accountability is at its lowest is so concerning.
The monopoly of media ownership by a few billionaires has to be broken and the AEC has to implement fixed 4 year terms and truth in political advertising.
I’m a lifelong ABC devotee and its saddens and worries me to see the ABC reduced in quality so it’s hard to watch or listen. Stan Grant and David Speers should just interview and constantly interrupt each other and leave the rest of us in peace.
Good work Crikey.

Accuracy and nonbiased reporting without the interests of the likes of Murdoch being the focus of the news
? How will the resignation of stinkers like Tug or Sucker help a sacked Fraudenburg become Victorian Premier ?
The AEC can’t “implement fixed 4 year terms”. It would require a referendum and (like most since 1901), it would not pass.
Who would run this ? The AEC could not run a chook raffle properly. To many Liberal appointees on the payroll ?
