Julian Assange has not always been able to count on the support of the government or the media in his home country, but he’ll have no such complaints about the government in Mexico.
Assange has been awarded the “keys to the city” of Mexico City by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum. His father and brother accepted on his behalf, and will apparently remain in Mexico City to meet Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Obrador has long been an advocate for Assange, calling him “the greatest journalist of all time”, petitioning the Trump and Biden White Houses to drop the charges against the Australian, and extending an offer of asylum.
Of course there is some irony in Obrador making this brave stand for press freedom. Free press advocates Article 19 reported earlier this year that his years in office have been the deadliest for Mexican journalists on record — something not helped by his populist media-bashing rhetoric and downplaying of violence against journalists.
Still, if Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acted on his stated opposition to the ongoing prosecution of Assange, Assange and his family wouldn’t have to turn to governments where that kind of tension existed.

At the outset of being PM Albanese assured us that the Assange situation was being ‘quietly’ worked on without any flag waving. I didn’t believe it then & still don’t. We are well overdue for an update on our hapless countryman.
Whenever an Australian is in trouble overseas, we are assured it’s best if we let the government deal with it “quietly.” How can we know? It could be just another example of unnecessary secrecy.
Or simple inaction on our behalf.
Just ask David Hicks.
We need some reassurance that the Government truly is working to secure justice for Assange. It will be most disappointing and tell us that the Government cannot be trusted to look after it’s citizens if Assange is extradited
Thank you Mexico for defending one of our citizens.
Wonder if he will meet with cohorts of El Chapo, should be interesting.
As far as Government dealing with Aussies being caught up in isdues overseas, they have taken the same approach as L/NP when they were in Government ” bury head in sand and hope it goes by”
The journalist in China who was arrested and who is awaiting trial ( been a few years now) and the forner Government did nothing nor is this Government.
