Congratulations to Jon Dee, whose campaign against Qantas’ latest degradation of its service — forcing vegetarians and other diet-restricted passengers to either eat meat or go hungry — has forced the airline to backflip and promise to restore vegetarian meals.
Qantas contacted Dee this morning to tell him it was restoring vegetarian food to all Qantas domestic flights.
The turnaround came after international media picked up the story, generating yet more negative publicity for an airline that has become a byword for poor service, cancelled flights and lost luggage, particularly as domestic rival Virgin continues to happily offer vegetarian meals on all flights. Another triumphant moment for CEO Alan Joyce. Hopefully Qantas hasn’t illegally sacked its chefs.
But Joyce and the Executive Management Team will miss out on their KPI and bonuses to slash and burn the catering section of Qantas. Oh well, they’ll just find another division the destroy….are there any left? And now if Alan could just get rid of the workforce that he despises and those pesky customers.
After one Qantas passenger has just completed a three month wait for lost baggage Qantas says things are back to normal – the old normal or the new normal – that is, if there is a difference, of course?
I cannot believe that a company would tear its customers like this, or does market concentration lead them to believe their customers can take it or leave it on major domestic routes.?
You gotta wonder who made the decision to ditch meal service for non-meat eaters. And why on earth they thought this was a good idea.
Maybe it was a grotesque PR stunt all along – “all publicity is good publicity”.
Without doubt it will have been some bean counter or overpaid external consultant.
A bloody good decision (pun intended)
