Is the Albanese honeymoon finally, definitively over, with a swing to the Liberal National Party in Fadden?
Not according to today’s Newspoll, which despite some truly desperate spin by Simon Benson — reminiscent of Dennis Shanahan’s finest work — shows the Coalition back to 10 points adrift of Labor in two-party preferred terms and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese increasing his personal lead over Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
Still, Dutton’s leadership is safe for now; losing a safe seat in his home state would have truly been the death knell for him, but that was never seriously on the cards — Fadden is Gold Coast LNP heartland that also votes for One Nation at higher levels even than the Queensland average. Instead, the LNP received a 4.3% swing on its primary vote, erasing the swing against Stuart Robert last year; though in 2PP terms, it still hasn’t recovered to 2019 levels.
Labor’s primary vote held steady, falling just 0.25%, with the extra LNP votes likely to have come from the absence of a Clive Palmer candidate, which left 6% of the vote up for grabs. That may have also helped One Nation’s primary vote — which rose 0.25% — hold up.
The only party to suffer anything noteworthy was the Greens, whose vote fell from nearly 11% to just over 6%, obliterating its gains in 2022. Still, for a right-wing retiree heartland, that’s not going to worry the Greens too much.
The other loser, if you like, was democracy: turnout fell markedly. There were more than 110,000 votes in Fadden in 2022; turnout on Saturday was less than 90,000, and the level of informal voting increased significantly.
Otherwise it was a fairly standard byelection. Queensland remains difficult for Labor, and will probably not improve while the ageing Palaszczuk government remains in office.
Federal Labor knows it can turn around difficult states — WA was once a wasteland for the ALP, but it took a pandemic, sublime stupidity from the federal Liberals and an extraordinarily dominant state leader in Mark McGowan to make it happen.
Given the teals in NSW and Victoria and the slow but sure self-destruction of the Liberals in Victoria, if anything Queensland may become the federal Liberals’ fortress. But as the Newspoll numbers show, you can’t win federal government by winning Queensland.
It would be almost inconceivable that Labor should take this seat………………
……………don’t forget it includes the Gold Coast, whose Mayor, Tom Tate has expressed the view that he wants to create a “Kingdom of God” on the Gold Coast, and has a “Spiritual Advisor” Sue Baynes with strong links to the American RWRNJs.
Little wonder that they see no problem with Morrison’s antics…………………………
……..and I am sure believe that poverty is a lifestyle choice by the poor and they deserved every inch of Robodebt.
The size of their white shoes is surely bigger than their IQ.
Other notable residents have included Fat Clive and Mike Gore and some dodgy Russians.
The IQ on display in footpath interviews was on display last week, and made me despair for our country if these people intend breeding too much.
I think these people are beyond breeding!
They certainly show a lack of breeding!
Is it low IQ or high levels of sociopathy?
They’re hardly struggling personally so maybe they have the last laugh. And because there is no god they will never faced any consequences for their actions.
What exactly is the downside?
The ABC coverage was bizarre. They kept reiterating LNP talking points about cost of living, which apparently voters were all raising… yet not a single one of their vox pops was about cost of living…
Who was chairing/editing that ‘coverage’ ……
Lumps of the blathering viewsmedia carry on as if they seem to be hoping that the tide might be turning in Dutton’s favour – that they’ll have a fight ‘referee’….
These latest chicken innards from a safe Liberal seat (that returned Robert last year???) retained by the Liberal Party, on much the same vote they gave Robert = “a glimmer of hope that the electorate might be turning to Dutton”?
What other games have they got – besides talking to themselves?
Fadden like Cook and Hughes would vote in a gorilla for the LNP. Robert, Scotty and Fat Craig are pretty similar to a non human. The Gold Coast has more crooks per sq metre than any other place.
Agree. Reckon they get what they deserve.
The once beautiful Paradise has been desecrated, demoralised and destroyed by greed- The election coterie return a disgusting abdication of accountabilty.
As someone said yesterday, the Gold Coast is the only place in Australia where people run into the sea to escape the sharks.
Yes winning a whiteshoe seat in Qld is not a sign of winning Australia, even though there are LNP likeminded everywhere, in similar seats especially- well, those that are not Teal or some other centre-right independent, anyway.
LNP “nationally” is at heart the Qld LNP and some fellow travellers. And they Qld LNP is well placed to kid themselves they are more powerful than they are, because of the disproportionate seats results in 2022. In the 2022 federal election the Qld LNP got 8.01% of the federal 1st pref vote – and 21 federal HoR seats. The Nats (basically NSW and Vic) got 3.61% and 10 seats. The Libs in all other States and the Territories got 23.8% of the 1st preference vote, and 27 seats (dropped to 26 after Aston): source AEC.
Dutton scraping for positives from a non-event victory.
Scratching my head though that the Crikey editor in my daily email wrote “…where the lnp TRIUMPHED on Saturday”…with no irony emojis attached.
Dutton’s speech was like a dry run for the latest bunch of three word slogans, ear worms and catchphrases they’re gonna give a run…”failed energy experiment”….”failed economic experiment”…not to mention Sussan L. serving up the not-at-all loopy “disastrous Albonomics” .
If any of these take, they will be the background drum beat of the M’doch&mates media machine, designed to work its way into the subconscious of the barely engaged, til the next election.
After that tax-payer zapping foray in 2016, I was wondering if Ley was back on the Gold Coast “combining business with personal business” again, looking for another Liberal donor property to buy.
Ley might want to ease off on that particular (GOP) line.
We’ve already seen what “Scomonomics” looked like………………..
…………and we got Robodebt and a Trillion-Dollar debt to show for it.
“Better Economic Managers” my arse.
