According to the Financial Times, this short online film
about the future of the media shows that “sometimes, a piece of science
fiction can turn out to be more than just a bit of crazy speculation”.
Called Epic,
and produced by two Fellows at the American journalism school The
Poynter Institute, it predicts that newspapers will lose the race for
online readers over the next ten years after failing to make rapid
changes needed to attract consumers who prefer to catch up with the
news on the internet.
“Yet, for all its speculation, the
film’s core message has started looking less fantastical since it began
capturing the imagination of figures in the media world,” says the FT, “not least of these is Rupert Murdoch” – who is “understood to have seen the film and taken notice”.
It makes chilling viewing, especially if you happen to be part of Ray Gavin’s “mainstream media”.
