When Crikey first hit our inboxes 10 years ago, I’m sure there were many who doubted whether people would pay for their daily fix of news and current affairs via an email service.

Those doubters would be more than eating their words, as Crikey celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade, Crikey has been renowned for its at times controversial commentary, but the fact remains that it is a must-read source that continues to break stories and stimulate debate on a range of issues.

Ten years is a long time in media, and we’ve seen fundamental shifts, ensuring politics, commerce and social discourse will never be the same again.

Crikey was at the vanguard of that change in Australia, and has successfully maintained its relevance and irreverence.

As chairman of the national competition regulator, I will watch with fascination the next 10 years — how the media continues to embrace the digital age, what this means for the Australian public, and that content isn’t locked in the hands of a few.

I congratulate Crikey for its contribution to the media over the past decade and wish it well into the future.
