The sentence of 15 months in prison for over $300,000 of tax evasion handed out to rock music entrepreneur Glenn Wheatley should not surprise anyone.

As Crikey noted when Mr Wheatley ended his plea of guilty a fortnight ago, the courts are generally tough on tax evaders. One can speculate that Mr Wheatley would have received a much higher sentence if he had not agreed to cooperate with the prosecuting authorities and repaid the full amount of tax evaded.

What will be interesting now will be to see whether other targets of Operation Wickenby — which is targeting offshore tax havens — seek to do deals with the prosecutors to reduce their possible gaol time.
