The
august Wall Street Journal is going all modern and starting a Saturday edition
in an attempt to boost its faltering circulation.
According
to this NY Times report, the new edition will start in September and readers will find a softer, gentler
style of paper: like the huge weekend edition of the New York
Times, or the Australian broadsheets, such as The Weekend
Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald or the Melbourne Age.
Content
will be lifestyle, not finance, which will mirror the approach taken by
another faltering financial newspaper, The Financial Times, whose Saturday
edition is full of wine, food, travel, employment and upscale product stories and ads. News
will not be a big feature.
Both
the FT and the regular Wall Street Journal have not recovered sales lost in the tech wreck of 2000-2002 or in the weaker markets since.
