Crikey editor Misha Ketchell writes:
Is Australia’s oldest and most venerable magazine about to ditch
the printing presses and go online? The Bulletin, which was first published in 1880, is
believed to be losing $5 million plus per year as its circulation and
advertising revenue slide. But it may have found the answer to its financial
woes – turn from print magazine into a fully online magazine.
Following the death of Kerry Packer – who used The Bulletin as a
platform for expressing his political and other viewpoints and pushing his business agenda –
there are two reasons for his son James to make The Bulletin paperless:
1) it will save millions of dollars and 2) it will sit perfectly with
his view of the new digital world.
Although this move is likely to be hotly denied at this stage, a fully online Bulletin would be
a telling statement about a new direction at the Packer empire. Watch this space.
