My tacitean perspective on the bulletin rubbish – by a PJK Fan:

“Noble character is best appreciated in those
ages in which it can most readily develop.”
Tacitus
Tacitus was a Roman
historian
(flourished second half of 1st centuryAD, easrly 2nd
century), whose 2 most famous works recount the history of the
Roman Empire during the 1st century AD. A theme
throughout his writings is that whilst during their reigns, heinous emperors
like Caligula and Nero can indulge in all sorts of immorality, promote their
cronies, destroy enemies etc – once they shed their mortal coil, their deeds and
reputation are in the hands of the historians – who can apply greater
objectivity in assessing their contribution to civilisation, personal worth etc
etc. The classic modern example of this
is the very quick fall from grace of Stalin after his death. The same could
apply to the unholy alliance between Howard and Packer over the reputation of
PJK. The obsequious ravings of Lyons will be in the
rubbish bin of history when a true account of these times can be
written. The present is whimsical, posterity is the true test of
a man.

Luke Hughes writes:

So The Bulletin says that Keating can’t move on. But can John Lyons and the
Bulletin move on from Keating? Apparently not, according to this week’s edition.
Some of the stories that Lyons gleefully quotes about Keating are over ten years
old. Tony Wright has been telling his story for years to anyone who would
listen. And this is news? Lyons also scraps the barrell the section on Mahathir,
the former Malasian Prime Minister. His suggestion that Keating damaged
bi-lateral ties through his insensistivity to Asian values shows him to be way,
way out of his depth. Mahathir campaigned against Australia no matter who was
in power. Hawke and Howard got the same treatment. It had nothing to do with
Keating and everything to do with Malaysian domestic politics. If only Lyons
would use his undoubted skills and well-refined stilletto into spearing someone
who was a friend, as opposed to, an enemy of Kerry Packer. Then that would
really be news.
