Furious
spies tell PM to ‘butt out’

Former
Australian Security Intelligence Service agent Warren Reed said police and
intelligence officers involved in covert surveillance of suspected terrorists
feared targets would now clam up or go underground.

‘The
message from inside the intelligence system, especially on the front line at
the state level, is for the Prime Minister to butt out and butt out now,’ he
said. ‘Mr
Howard is threatening the security of
operations at the moment.’

Mr Reed said the top level of Australia’s security services — ASIS and
the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation — were heavily politicised
and there was a rift with agents who carried out the missions…
