OMG! There is no kangaroo on the new Qantas Boeing 767-300F which Qantas Freight will use to boost capacity on thec trans Tasman by 40% from February 2011.
What is going on? According to the press release, Qantas is introducing a new ‘stylish’ livery for Qantas Freight with the jet.
But….but. Every Qantas chairman and CEO in history is on record as saying the Qantas brand and its flying kangaroo are its greatest asset. That it is the biggest brand ever in Australia, bigger than Vegemite, Speedos, Arnott’s Biscuits, or for those reading this on dialysis, BEX analgesics, and one of the most recognised if cruelly misspelled brand names on earth!
And kangaroos have pouches. For delivering things, well, baby kangaroos in particular, safely. Think of the branding synergies between Qantas, a flying kangaroo, pouches and parcels. We demand to know, who killed the Qantas kangaroo?
A very charming but adamant Qantas spokeswoman held the line. “Well, it IS flown by another party for Qantas,” she said. Which it is, in the form of Express Freighters Australia, but Cobham also fly Qantaslink 717s for Qantas, and they have the kangaroo on the tail. And besides Express Freighters Australia is using the word Qantas on the main body of the jet, which sure beats Express FA as a catchy title.
My protests having been firmly put down, I guess we just have to concede that its Qantas’s jet and they can paint anything on it they like, including a wombat, or a dingo. There’s a thought.
