The Winners: Seven News averaged 1.476 million and Today Tonight was second with 1.378 million. Home and Away won 7pm for Seven with 1.293 million and This Is Your Life won 8.30pm for Nine with 1.265 million. RPA benefited at 9.30pm with 1.243 million, its best of far this year. A Current Affair averaged 1.198 million and Nine News, 1.168 million. Make Me a Supermodel on Seven at 7.30pm, 1.158 million. Nine’s Two And A half Men repeat at 7pm averaged 1.145 million and Nine’s Getaway averaged 1.060 million (and suffered a rare loss at 7.30pm). Law and Order: Criminal Intent on Ten at 8.30pm was the 11th and final show with a million viewers or more with 1.036 million.
The Losers: The Strip, Heroes and Out of The Blue. Oprah Winfrey Presents (Baz Luhrmann’s Australia), just 763,000 people watched. The ABC combination of The 7.30 Report and then Catalyst at 8pm beat Oprah on Ten into a 4th place. It beat Inspector Rex into 5th who averaged 367,000 on SBS at the same time. Will the movie suffer the same fate.
News & CA: Seven News again won nationally and in every market but Today Tonight lost Sydney and Brisbane to ACA. ACA was at least on the pace coming out of Brisbane and the storm damaged areas last night. TT, which used to do moves like that, was anchored in Sydney. Ten News averaged 810,000, the late News/Sports Tonight, 247,000. The 7pm ABC News averaged 989,000. The 7.30 Report, 962,000. Lateline, 276,000, Lateline Business, 169,000. SBS News at 6.30pm, 145,000, the 9.30pm SBS News, 176,000. 7am Sunrise 365,000, 7am Today, 306,000. That’s helping Kerri-Anne on Nine from 9am which averaged 169,000 yesterday and is close to seven’s Morning Show which averaged 183,000 yesterday.
The Stats: Nine won 6pm to midnight All People with 29.7% (29.3%) from Seven with 29.4% (27.6%), Ten with 19.6% (21.6%), the ABC with 15.6% (16.2%) and SBS with 5.7% (4.7%). Seven won said it won 16 to 39, 25 to 542 and 18 to 49s. Nine won Sydney and Adelaide. Seven won Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Seven leads the week, 29.1% to 27.2%. In regional areas a win to WIN/NBN with 30.8% from Prime/7Qld with 25.3%, Southern Cross (Ten) with 20.6%, the ABC with 16.3% and SBS with 6.9%.
Glenn Dyer’s comments: Nine’s The Strip averaged 532,000 viewers at 10.30pm and beat Heroes on Seven with 500,000. On Ten it was Out of The Blue for half an hour with 321,000. What a collection of losers and has-been programs — or “never even made it” in the case of Out Of The Blue.
The Test coverage on Nine averaged 458,000 which dominated the set up to 4.30pm.
Tonight: Well after another day of cricket, Better Homes and Gardens on Seven and that’s it. Nine goes the Harry Potter movie trick at 7.30pm, Seven and Ten have movies and the ABC has a couple of programs that appear to make you want to eat TV Guide for light relief.
Tomorrow it’s sport (and don’t forget the Rugby Union from France on Ten and Foxtel) and then the cricket on Nine and then the Rugby League World Cup Final in the evening.
Sunday. Cricket and sport replays: there’s nothing much on Sunday night apart from the final of Australian Idol. Nine, ABC and Seven seem to have switched to summer programming (apart from 60 Minutes). And, speaking of 60 Minutes, it’s nice that they have given a big free plug to the new UK season of SBS’s Top Gear which returns Monday night. Cameron Williams, the hard-hitting investigative Today show sports host does the profile: be still my baking souffle!

Methinks that all this positive promotion is trying to distract us that ‘Australia’ is a giant steaming dog-t*rd of a film: beautifully shot, no doubt, as well acted as the script will allow, no doubt, (though Our Nic has never been a great actor – I can’t think of anywhere, maybe Moulin Rouge, where she has been more than just adequate), but even the fawning Australian media has given it ‘mixed’ review. I notice that Oprah stayed away from praising the plot , concentrating on the shots….
