The Winners

Seven as Desperate
Housewives (2.181 million), Today Tonight (1.6 million) and Seven News (1.551
million) were one, two and three last night. Plus 24 (1.2
million) beat a first run Cold Case on Nine, Big Brother Uncut and Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope.
The Losers

Nine and Ten. Nine’s package of Bert Newton highlights gathered 1.18 million viewers at 7:30pm, 300,000 more
than the disaster it replaced, Nanny 911, but wasn’t enough to win the night for
Nine. Eddie McGuire’s Millionaire (1.26 million), was also down a touch from
recent levels. Only Big
Brother’s nominations episode kept Ten afloat.
News & CA

Seven’s Today Tonight and News won easily on the back
of good performances in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Nine News and A Current Affair won Melbourne
and split Adelaide.
Nine’s revamped three-hour Today show popped up yesterday and was beaten
easily by Seven’s Sunrise.
It’s gotta be the personnel next at Willoughby.
The Stats

After Ten won Sunday night, Seven won last night, leaving Nine
in the unusual position of being winless after two nights. That hasn’t happened for more than
three months. Nine’s loss in Melbourne must have
been painful given the Bert Newton special and his popularity in that city.
Seven won with 29.7% to Nine on 26.3%, Ten down on 20.9%, the ABC also down
on 14.7% and SBS up on 8.4%, thanks to Mythbusters again.

For all the spin Sam Chisholm put on his return
in last week’s media interviews, there’s a big gap between the hype and
Nine’s ratings performance at the moment. A narrow win last week thanks
to the AFL and NRL games on Friday night and now losses on Sunday and
Monday nights. So much to do, so little product! All this means more
pressure on Nine’s audience share and ad revenues. Still the One, yes,
but Cocoon TV, as we saw with the Bert Newton special last night,
doesn’t make for high market share.
