A major source of the rockets fired into Israel and the reason they’re
being fired are the same – Iran, and its efforts to divert world
attention from its quest for nuclear weapons. Iran, with Syria’s help,
founded, funds, arms and trains Hezbollah, which launched the current
war against Israel when it invaded Israel, killed its soldiers and
kidnapped two others. At the same time it launched a volley of rocket
attacks against Israeli towns. Iran is also Hamas’s major patron, which has its headquarters in Damascus.

Hezbollah and Hamas rockets are not about destroying Israeli
infrastructure; they are about deliberately killing Israelis. Israel
has responded. It did not initiate or seek this violence. Israel’s
military campaign in Gaza and southern Lebanon has involved bombing
Hamas and Hezbollah infrastructure, military assets and headquarters as
well as rocket emplacements. The reason for the naval and air blockade
is to prevent rapid Iranian and Syrian resupply of Hezbollah. This war
is not against the Lebanese people but against Hezbollah.

Israel has flooded the neighbourhoods close to Hezbollah offices with
pamphlets, encouraging residents to leave for their own safety. It has
allowed food, water and medicine into Gaza. Hezbollah and Hamas rockets
targeting Israeli towns, on the other hand, are about killing civilians
– and they’ve done so amidst celebration on the streets of Gaza,
Beirut, Damascus and Tehran.

Most of the Arab world recognises the immorality of Hezbollah’s
actions. Condemnation is clear from Egypt, Jordan and even Saudi
Arabia, who have slammed Hezbollah for hijacking the Lebanese
government and people in its quest to destroy Israel.

Syrian and Iranian help aside, the Lebanese government, like the
Palestinian Authority, is legally and morally responsible. Despite
numerous UN Security Council Resolutions demanding the disarming of
Hezbollah, Lebanon allowed the terrorist group to establish a mini
state bordering Israel. They even invited Hezbollah to join the
governing coalition, in which the latter has two ministers. At the very
least, Iran and Syria have to be stopped from mobilising their
proxies Hezbollah and Hamas to pursue their quest to destroy Israel.
