Having last night attended a back-to-back screening of classic 1930s “educational” exploitation films Reefer Madness (1936) and Sex Madness (1938), it’s tempting, as it always is when indulging in these nom nom nuggets of nostalgic nonsense, to lunge into a patronising appraisal of the awesome tomfoolery exhibited by all and sundry.
It’s a temptation I will avoid due to a far more pressing matter. Both films are littered with moments of unintentional hilarity. One scene in Sex Madness, however, threw the late night crowd into a collective wall-rattling guffaw.
An actor appeared on the scream and somebody in the audience yelled “IT’S TONY ABBOTT!”
Indeed, the ubiquitous Opposition Leader appears to have somehow managed to make a cameo in a 1938 American exploitation movie (possibly using Jim Schembri’s time machine). One viewer was savvy enough to reach for the their iPhone and take a couple of snaps. Here they are:
