Today’s Morgan Poll confirms this week’s Newspoll outcome, suggesting the Government suffered no damage from the petrol debate last week.
Taken last weekend after the Government suffered a shocker of a week over Fuelwatch, complete with two major leaks, the Government only slipped slightly in its primary support, while the Coalition slipped 2.5% to yield a remarkable 63-37 2PP lead to the Government.
Did people react badly to the Coalition’s petro-populism after all? Notice no one has spoken of Nelson’s leadership while the Government has sweated over bowser prices – but a few more numbers of this magnitude and the chatter will start again.
The unedifying petrol debate may also be behind the surge in support for the Greens – up a massive (for them) 3.5% to 9%. Good policy being rewarded in the opinion polls? Who’d have thought it.
