There’s only one poll that counts, of course. No, not on election day — nobody can wait that long. It’s Crikey blogger Possum Comitatus’ Pollytrend graph:

Polls jump around, buoying and betraying parties week-to-week. It’s the trend when you factor them all in — Newspoll, Nielsen, Galaxy, Roy Morgan, Essential Research, etc — that counts. And for Labor, it still looks ugly. As Possum reports:
“Over the past three months or so we’ve witnessed a gradual decline in Labor’s two-party preferred, with that four-month-strong flat-lining of 46/54 to the Coalition finally coming to an end in the last week of February. Between March and mid-May the ALP experienced a three-point fade in the two-party preferred vote — running at about a one-point loss a month — followed by a slight one-point recovery over the past three weeks or so.”
Recent polls may have given Labor some hope, but the trend is down. Way down.
Probably irreversibly.
Give it a rest will you. If the government is so incompetent it will bury itself without the media’s continued help. Why is this even considered important compared to other news in the last 24 hours?
And just like Crikey, News continues to twist the story. Latest headline is “Economy booms but Hockey declares Swan ‘scary'”. How to turn a positive into a negative in one easy lesson.
Does Crikey’s new editor believe he’s somehow cool/hip by making these short editorials with the snappy one-liners at the end? Seems like they’ve all been seriously anti-government lately, and all pretty doom and gloom. C’mon, we get enough one-liners that don’t tell the entire picture in every other news source. I pay for better than this, Crikey.
As someone who loathes polls with a passion (esp if they show my personal druthers to be non starters) I have to wonder about the conclusion drawn from the pretty colours & wiggly lines shown above – to me the trend for ALP looks UP.
As to how to spin, y’gotta love Sloppy Hippo yesterday declaring that the economy’s roaring strong “..so imagine how grat it would be if WE were in power!!!”
Is that all they got to proffer, time for an early shower, or wallow in Sloppy’s case.
