Point one of a per cent. The number landed with a thud at 11.30 this morning and sent Coalition media advisers scurrying for adjectives to describe the government’s economic failures.
The jump in the nation’s unemployment rate to 5.2% is not good news. That’s 27,000 fewer people in full-time work, wiping out the gains from May.
But there’s other figures worth considering. Like the unemployment rates in other nations:
- Germany: 5.6%
- New Zealand: 6.7%
- Canada: 7.2%
- Sweden: 7.8%
- United Kingdom: 8.1%
- United States: 8.2%
- France: 10.1%
- Portugal: 15.2%
- Greece: 21.9%
- Spain: 24.6%
- South Africa: 25.2%
Given that Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition complain about good figures, I see them applauding the government for this.
But let’s do it with some perspective.
There is only one perspective point of view from the MSM & that is the lieberal one of ‘how can we unseat a legitimate government’ because we didn’t get elected…. answer= anyway we can.
When the coalition gets to govern unemployment will rise, as according to Joe Hockey they are sacking 20,000 government staff. The liberal/national governments in VIC, NSW, QLD have already shown their mettle and sacked many of their employees.
In a nutshell unemployment will be much higher with an Abbott led government. I expect this is remembered in searching for adjectives on the latest unemployment figures. Maybe they should use the following slogan: “this is the calm before the storm, you ain’t seen nothing yet – wait till we get in, we’ll show you unemployment”!
I don’t have the figures at hand, but from memory, John Winston Howard’s results were above 5.2%, making Tony’s offering a kind of “back to the future” proposition.
Further, the number of employes people must have risen again under Labor to achieve the figure of 5.2%. Compare this with Joe Hockey’s promise of tens of thousands less on his next watch.
employes => employed. Sorry.
