Victoria’s right-wing Labor factional powerbrokers are in a bit of a whirl at the moment with the ever-changing factional alignments – but everyone’s being nice to Mohammed Abbouche.
Abbouche has been in talks with the Socialist Left about rejoining their faction after he walked in 2003. Word is that he has been promised the state seat of Yuroke, currently held by Liz Beattie, in return for supporting Maria Vamvakinou in the federal seat of Calwell. Labor Unity has promised to support an ETU nominated candidate for Calwell after Dean Mighell split from the Socialist Left.
Why all the attention? Abbouche is a member of the powerful ALP committee that contributes to the preselection of candidates. Given the bloodbath that is about to occur in that regard, it is no wonder that at the moment he can name his price.
