How many of these 563 properties are negatively geared?
Is this only properties in their own names, i.e. it wouldn’t include properties held by trusts or companies they control?
Bearing in mind that he’s a fair way down the list, it does seem somewhat unfair to have Malcolm Turnbull as Mr Monopoly man on this one.
And who on earth is Barry O’Sullivan? How much time does he spend on parliamentary duties if he is looking after all those investment properties?
Don’t expect to see any regulations supporting first home buyers, increasing public housing stock or reducing negative gearing… How many investment properties does a member need to own before they have to abstain from voting on housing issues due to conflict of interest? If palmersaurus can still vote on mining issues though, I guess personal vested interests don’t count as a conflict…
Crikey are a bit late to the party here. Lindsay David (author of Australia: Boom to Bust), Phillip Soos and Paul Egan uncovered this weeks ago, seems a bit un-referenced in that respect.
There’s also a petition addressed to Nick Xenophon against his crazy idea to give first home buyers access to super funds, which questions his motives, given his interests in up to 8 investment properties. I encourage you to support it, speak up against vested interests forming policy in their favour:
