It is the burden of countries hosting major international meetings that they must endure the presence of some deeply unsavoury leaders. The Chinese government, one of the most brutally repressive in the world, is a member of both APEC and the G20. Vietnam, a serial and ferocious human rights abuser, is a member of APEC. Saudi Arabia, a vile theocracy that engages in beheadings for crimes such as “sorcery” and systematically oppresses women and foreign workers, is a G20 member. And Russia, run by the profoundly corrupt and repressive Putin regime, is also a member of both bodies.
The Australian government’s attitude toward Vladimir Putin has changed somewhat over time. In 2007, John Howard enthusiastically embraced Putin when he visited Australia for the Sydney APEC meeting and signed a deal to sell Australian uranium to Russia. Now, Putin will attend the Brisbane G20 meeting as a reviled figure seen as indirectly responsible for the deaths of 38 Australian citizens in the MH17 mass murder.
The Prime Minister says that, in effect, Australia is bound by G20 rules rather than its own preferences and that accordingly Putin is permitted to come to Australia. For this Tony Abbott has been criticised by both the opposition and his own party, in Queensland Premier Campbell Newman. But the Prime Minister has adopted the sensible course. It will not serve Australia’s interests to seek, successfully or unsuccessfully, to exclude the Russian President from the G20 meeting. There are already questions about how effective the G20 can now be — diminishing its effectiveness further will only serve to strengthen those doubts, particularly at a time when there are major concerns about the ongoing depression in Europe and growing worries about China’s property market.
And for those who want some form of payback for the downing of MH17, Putin’s presence in Australia allows Abbott the opportunity to direct Australia’s criticisms of Russia personally and directly to the Russian leader.
What was the alternative? “Razz-Putin” and not Li Keqiang or any of the others with their human rights abuse records?
[…. “Because Vlad made Toady look a clown on the world stage in Bali 12 months ago”?]
“And for those who want some form of payback…” WTF???
For Xrissake stop with the hideous propaganda.
I did not take out a subscription to Crikey to get the same crap as served up by the Murdoch gutter dwellers.
There is not one shred of plausible coherent evidence whatsoever to suggest that Russians/President Putin were involved with the shooting down of MH17.
It was much much more likely to have been shot down by Su25s flown by affiliates of Poroshenko’s putschist crowd in Kiev.
1) It was the Kiev ATC that redirected MH17 over the spot where it was shot down.
2) Spanish controller tweeted about jets shadowing MH17. Tapes of all interactions since ‘removed’!!
3) No AGM tracks were reported (it was daylight).
4) Pictures show holes (30mm cannon size) on both sides of aircraft cockpit panels.
5) It was Poroshenko’s forces that shelled the crash site.
6) Messages and videos were shown to be faked. Beforehand.
Why? A nasty false flag to give an excuse for NATO to invade and interfere in Russia’s business. Complete with phoney intelligence and pathetically rigged photos. Such is the utter criminal stupidity of most Western leaders, had President Putin been as mad as some of them, had Merkel not had a stronger sense of right and madness, there could well have been nuclear war in Europe.
Putin is in a far far stronger position to criticise Western support for the behaviour of Poroshenko’s putschists for utilising the Neonazis storm troopers and murderers of the Right Sector, Svoboda and thugs such as the Azov brigade. The list of the atrocities they have committed is seriously long. Abbott and Bishop will seriously embarrass themselves if they try and stare down President Putin.
Why do you write such jingoistic crap?
@Reechard. Hear, hear!
Sometimes I think renewing my subscription was a mistake when I read such crap as this editorial. It may as well have been written by the good folks at NATO with all their attendant Russo phobias, instead of by someone 10,000 miles away who, one would hope, could at least try to see if there is any other side to the story.
The evidence you present is there in the public domain. Questions such as ‘why haven’t there been any sat. int. presented by the USA and NATO?’, considering that they blanket this planet 24/7 and that part of the world even more given their geo-strategic interests there is a question never asked nor is the data requested.
Objectivity? Only as far as the cheque book or ‘fat controllers’ will allow. Independent media? My fat arse!
I agree with the two previous comments (Reechard & GOS). Truth wasn’t the first casualty of the MH17 fiasco, it was taken out in a preemptive strike long before. There seems to be more consistent information about the MH 370 disaster… and we don’t even know where it is!
Putin is a piece of crap, no doubt. A duplicitous world leader who lies as easily as he breaths, uses his position to enrich himself and his benefactors, sends aggressive military forces into sovreign countries and wraps nationalism around himself to try to cover all these short-comings. This is a definition that also applies to the majority of G 20 delegates though (particularly our own). I’d be happy to see none of those 2-bit wankers in $1000 suits turn up in Queensland. We have more than enough of that calibre of people up here already.
Truth wasn’t just the first casualty in MH370
Now Toady’s going to “shirt-front” him – should be interesting in itself?
It would be tempting to criticise him for “sinking to Putin’s level” – if he wasn’t down there anyway?
