Yesterday Crikey received this press release from the offices of the PM and Foreign Minister:
The UNCCC? We’re pretty sure that’s not a thing.
As Giles Parkinson points out over at RenewEconomy, the body charged for the last two decades with bringing the countries of the world together to agree on a course of climate action is called the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or UNFCCC. “UN climate change conference” is a generic name given to that gathering happening in Lima this week — but there is no such body as the UNCCC.
As Parkinson writes:
“It may be a mere detail, but it says much about this government’s approach to climate change. Facts are not considered high value assets. Of more concern, though, is the decision announced in the same release to lock away the review of Australia’s post 2020 climate change targets within the PM’s office, in the same way that the review of the renewable energy target was hijacked by those close to Abbott earlier this year. Clearly, the PM’s office has little trust in the ministers responsible.”
Is it any wonder we’ve been named the world’s worst industrial country on climate action?
From this government – surely when it comes to a “Convention on Climate Changes” the “F” is understood – it’s just not for “Framework”?
‘Being caught with the handkerchief when the music stops . . is the Abbott Government’s ultimate No! No! No matter how fast you skip; each time the music stops there is one less seat at the table . . .
Climate Change inevitably, will engulf the Australian Government. The only real option left is for PM to avow that the junior Minister for Environment has been spoken to strongly . . and the government is now back on track!!
This is a timely warning to watch all government announcements for typos.
Particularly relevant when the debt figure is announced – a lazy ‘0’ may be missing from the end of the official figure. Naturally it wouldn’t be Hockey’s, Corman’s or Abbott’s fault – they’d somehow shunt it back to Rudd/Gillard. As with everything.
Crikey might be in a position to claim someone else “Glosses over climate facts” once it seriously addresses the fact that nothing Australia does has any value [other perhaps than propaganda value for True Believers?] until there’s at the very least a legally binding, enforceable International Agreement.
Till then, emotive posters of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but logical chains, and since you don’t appear to be affected by them anyway, prattle on.
As with other mudorc minions, the term ‘low information’ is a good description of this government.
